ABSTRACT

Objetivos: associar a percepção materna do peso do filho (PMPF) e o estado nutricional dele.

Objectives: To associate the maternal perception of the child's weight (MPCW) and the child's nutritional status. To describe child's lifestyle behavior problems (CLBPs) and maternal self-efficacy (SE) to deal with them, as well as to verify differences according to children with and without overweight-obesity (OW-OB) and MPCW. Material and methods: There was participation of 274 dyads (mother-preschool child). MPCW was assessed through words and images. The mothers answered the Lifestyle Behaviour Checklist. The child's weight and height were measured. Results: 18.8 % (n = 13) of the mothers of children with OW-OB and 78.8 % (n = 160) of the mothers of children without OW-OB obtained adequate MPCW values through words (X2 = 77.759; DoF = 1; p < .001). It was identified that the mothers of children with OW-OB reported more CLBPs and less SE. When the child's OW-OB is perceived through words, there are more CLBPs (F = 17.041; p = .001) and less SE (U = 1,118; p = .015). Conclusions: Inadequate MPCW was predominant in mothers of children with OW-OB. When OW-OB is perceived, there are more CLBPs and fewer SE. It is recommended to promote adequate MPCW, particularly in mothers of children with OW-OB. Images assist in the identification of the child's OW-OB more than to classify it into a category.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the association between body weight perception and quality of diet among Brazilian adolescents. Methods: The sample was composed of 71,740 adolescents aged from 12 to 17 years-old enrolled in the Study of Cardiovascular Risks in Adolescents (Estudo de Riscos Cardiovasculares em Adolescentes - ERICA), carried out during 2013-2014. Body weight perception was self-reported. Food consumption was assessed by food record and quality of diet index for Brazilian adolescents (DQIA-BR) was calculated, considering the balance, diversity, and diet composition. The quality of diet was compared according to weight perception for the entire sample and after stratification by nutritional status. Linear regression models were used to assess the association between body weight perception and quality of diet. Results: Among the studied adolescents, 14.7 and 30.3% reported to be underweight or overweight in relation to their desired weight, respectively. Those who perceived themselves as overweight had lower quality of diet (DQIA-BR=16.0 vs. 17.4 points; p<0.001). After stratification by BMI, adolescents with normal weight (DQIA-BR=15.3 points) or overweight (DQIA-BR=16.1 points), but who perceived themselves as overweight showed lower quality of diet when compared to their peers. In adjusted analysis, overweight perception (β= -0.51; 95%CI -0.77; -0.24) was associated to lower quality of diet. However, this association was no longer significant after stratification by BMI status. Conclusions: Body weight perception can influence the consumption of healthy foods and the quality of diet, especially for those who consider themselves overweight. However, this association is influenced by nutritional status.

ABSTRACT

Objectives@#The study aims to determine whether there is an association of perceived weight status with unhealthy diet practices. @*Method@#An analytic cross-sectional study was conducted among 625 adult undergraduate students from U.P. Manila. The survey included questions regarding sociodemographic status, habits related to diet and weight management, and perceived body mass index (BMI). Actual BMI were obtained and calculated from actual anthropomorphic measurements. @*Results@#In the population surveyed, it was seen that 53.28% of the students accurately perceived their BMI status, 26.08% overestimated their BMI status, while 17.28% underestimated their BMI status. It was also seen that over-estimating of BMI status is more associated with unhealthy diet practices. Those who over estimated their BMI were 1.95 times more likely to skip meals (p=0.001) and 1.56 times more likely to engage in cutting of food (p=0.034). Physical activity was also seen to be associated with these practices. @* Conclusion@#Over-estimation of BMI may be linked to unrealistic goals in weight loss resulting in unhealthier diet-related habits.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Misperception of weight status is a risk factor that affects psychological health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between weight misperception patterns and psychological distress among Iranian children and adolescents. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional nationwide study where data was collected from 14,440 students, aged 7–18 years who participated in the national school-based surveillance program (CASPIAN-V). The students’ weight perception and psychological distress were assessed by validated questionnaires. Weight misperception was classified as misperception of being either underweight or overweight with respect to actual weight. RESULTS: The rate of weight misperception in all study participants was 59.1%. In groups with a perception of being underweight or overweight, the risks of worthlessness, being worried, experiencing aggression, insomnia, or depression, were significantly higher than groups with an accurate weight perception (p < 0.05). The risk of anxiety in girls of normal weight who perceived themselves as underweight, decreased by 57% compared to girls with an accurate weight perception (OR: 0.43; 95% CI, 0.28–0.66). CONCLUSION: Weight misperception is highly prevalent among Iranian children and adolescents and is associated with their psychological health status. Appropriate education intervention needs to be developed to improve the children and adolescents’ perception of their body weight status.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: In order to determine the amount of weight corresponding to differ ent linguistic categories according to the perception of the burden handled by workers and based on their body composition, a study was carried out on interurban bus attendants. The variables studied were: body composition expressed in terms of physical constitution, perceived effort through the Borg scale and comfort test using the Corlett and Bishop diagram. The results indicated that for the physi cal constitution classified as standard, the workers considered as moderate weight 19.6 kg; for the lack of exercises constitution, a weight of 14.3 kg and for obese constitution, an amount of 10.5 kg; which shows a direct relationship between the body composition and the perception of the weight of the manipulated load, since as the physical complexion is less healthy the ability to lift a load decreas es significantly. This research compares the results obtained with the weight limits established by Law No. 20,949, which regulates the maximum weight of burden for humans to carry in Chile, which shows that the perceived weight, even in the extremely heavy cate gory, is framed within of the current law.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective: To investigate the association between the perception of body weight (as above or below the desired) and behaviors for body weight control in adolescents. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study that included 1051 adolescents (aged 15-19 years) who were high school students attending public schools. The authors collected information on the perception of body weight (dependent variable), weight control behaviors (initiative to change the weight, physical exercise, eating less or cutting calories, fasting for 24 h, taking medications, vomiting, or taking laxatives), and measured body weight and height to calculate the body mass index and then classify the weight status. Associations were tested by multinomial logistic regression analysis. Results: Adolescents of both sexes who perceived their body weight as below the expected weight took more initiatives to gain weight, and those who perceived themselves as overweight made more efforts to lose weight. In adolescents who perceived themselves as overweight, the behavior of not taking medication was associated with the outcome only in boys (Odds Ratio = 8.12), whereas in girls, an association was observed with the variables eating less, cutting calories, or avoiding fatty foods aiming to lose or avoid increasing body weight (Odds Ratio = 3.39). Adolescents of both sexes who practiced exercises were more likely to perceive themselves as overweight (male Odds Ratio = 2.00; Odds Ratio = 1.93 female). Conclusion: The perception of the body weight as above and below one's expected weight was associated with weight control behaviors, which were more likely to result in initiatives to lose and gain weight, respectively.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was performed to elucidate whether the obesity or body image is a barrier to breast screening compliance in Korean women. METHODS: We included 54,017 women aged between 35 to 70 years from the Korea Community Health Survey (KCHS) 2014 dataset. To identify whether a mutual relationship exists between weight perceptions and breast cancer screening rates, the participants were divided into three groups according to the level of concordance between Body Mass Index (BMI) and a subjective body image. Descriptive analyses, a chi-square test, and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed. RESULTS: After covariate adjustment, the screening rate of the overweight group was 1.09 times higher than the normal weight group (odds ratio [OR], 1.09; confidence interval [CI], 0.00–0.16; p=.038) and the severe obesity group was 1.20 times lower (OR, 0.83; CI, −0.36–0.00; p=.047). Weight misperception also had a significant influence on breast cancer screening. Especially, The overweight distortion group was less likely to undergo breast cancer screening (OR, 0.93; CI, −0.15–0.00; p=.037). CONCLUSION: Obesity and weight misperceptions are associated with lower compliance with breast cancer screening guidelines.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Introduction: This study aimed to analyze the association between nutritional status, body image perception, and extreme weight control behaviors among adolescents. Methods: This is an analytical cross-sectional study conducted in Brazil based on the National Adolescent Student Health Survey (Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde do Escolar - PeNSE) of 2015, with adolescents aged 13 to 17 years. Nutritional status and body image perception were the independent variables. The two dependent variables were vomiting or laxative use and use of medicines and other formulas for weight control in the 30 days prior to data collection. We used Poisson regression models for association, with demographic variables for control. Results: 7.4% of adolescents (95%CI 6.7 - 8.2) reported vomiting or using laxatives, with no difference between genders. The prevalence of use of medicines and formulas was higher among boys (7.8%; 95%CI 6.6 - 8.9). The association between nutritional status and extreme behaviors was not significant. However, the prevalence of vomiting or laxative use for adolescents who considered themselves very fat was 2.3 (95%CI 1.1 - 4.7) times higher for boys and 5.3 (95%CI 3.3 - 8.6) times higher for girls, while the use of medicines and formulas was 4.0 (95%CI 2.3 - 7.1) times higher for girls who considered themselves very fat. Conclusion: Body image perception seems to have a greater influence on extreme behaviors than nutritional status. Strategies involving health services and schools have great potential to impact the self-esteem and health of students positively.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The present study is focused on understanding weight perception related with individual- and school-level multifactorial origins, underestimated and overestimated respectively, in normal body weight adolescents. METHODS: Using the 2017 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey data of 45,902 students from 799 secondary schools, a multilevel multinomial logistic regression analysis was performed where adolescents (level1) were nested within schools (level 2). RESULTS: At the school level, the average school body mass index (BMI, kg/m²) and physical education were associated with weight perception among both boys and girls. In boys, geographic areas were associated with weight underestimation. At the individual level, perceived economic status, weekly allowance, BMI (kg/m²), smartphone usage time (hrs/day) and perceived stress were associated with weight perception among both boys and girls. Age, paternal education, academic achievement and alcohol use were associated with weight perception among girls, while part-time job and physical activity were associated with weight perception among boys. CONCLUSION: Our findings underscore the importance of individual- and school-level environments in developing correct weight perception and have implications for school health education to establish healthy lifestyle behaviors for all adolescents.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed at identifying the current nutrition knowledge, body-related perspectives, and weight control behaviors of Korean-Chinese college students. METHODS: We conducted a pilot study by employing a healthy weight education program targeting Korean-Chinese nursing school students at the Yanbian University of Science and Technology in Yanbian, China. RESULTS: This pilot study included 40 participants (38 women and 2 men; mean age, 20.5 years). The current weight status of the participants was as follows: 7.9% underweight, 78.9% normal weight, 7.9% overweight, and 5.3% obese. However, nearly two-thirds of the participants were dissatisfied with their current body size (43.6% a little dissatisfied; 20.5% very dissatisfied). Fifty percent of the participants perceived their current body size as being either slightly fat (35.0%) or very fat (15.0%). The following unhealthy weight control methods were commonly used among the 24 participants who practiced weight control: (1) laxatives or diuretics (91.7%), (2) saunas or spas (87.5%), and (3) a one-food diet (79.2%). In addition, the nutrition knowledge of the participants increased by 24 points from 117 points (pretest) to 141 points (posttest) through the healthy weight education program. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study indicate an urgent need to educate Korean-Chinese college students on healthy weight control methods and body-related perspectives.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess the body weight perception of adolescents and to investigate the difference between mental health and weight control behavior according to body weight perception. METHODS: Study data on 12–18 years old adolescents with normal BMI was obtained from the 6th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013–2015). Rao-Scott Chi-square test and ANOVA were used for the analysis. RESULTS: The percentage of adolescents with a misperception of body weight was 43.3%, and their subjective health status (p=.013), stress perception (p=.001), and depression (p=.001) were worse than for adolescents who had the correct perception of their body weight. The percentage of adolescents who were trying to lose weight while perceiving their body weight as normal was 36.9%. Body weight control behavior had significant differences according to dietary intake (frequency of eating dinner (p=.015)), energy intake (p=.004), and carbohydrate intake (p<.001), but there was no significant difference according to exercise. CONCLUSION: Parents, school teachers, and nurses should make efforts to ensure that Korean adolescents perceive their body weight correctly, and prevent unhealthy weight control behaviors.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate gender differences in the association between depressive symptoms and weight, weight perception, and body satisfaction among Korean adolescents. METHODS: A secondary data analysis was performed on data from 33,374 adolescents who participated in the 2015 Adolescent Health Behavior Online Survey. They were classified as underweight, normal weight, or overweight/obese; weight perception was classified into perception of being underweight, normal weight, or overweight/obese; and weight satisfaction into desire to gain weight, satisfied, and desire to lose weight. RESULTS: Among boys, perception of being underweight (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 1.20, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.07~1.35) and desire to gain weight (AOR: 1.45, 95% CI: 1.30~1.62) were associated with depression. Among girls, perception of being overweight or obese (AOR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.07~1.29) and a desire to lose weight (AOR: 1.30, 95% CI: 1.18~1.42) were associated with depression. CONCLUSION: Gender differences were observed in the association between weight perception and depression in adolescents. The perception of being underweight among boys and the perception of being overweight/overweight among girls were associated with depression. Thus, gender-specific intervention programs to correct weight perception and weight satisfaction are needed in order to relieve depressive symptoms in adolescents.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to quantify the degree of effort using the method of PSE in official games of futsal. The sample consisted of 10 male athletes (16.5 ± 2 years) who participated in the state level of School Youth Games. The behavior of perceived exertion (RPE) in response to the five official games of futsal in the under-17 category was evaluated, two and three through the qualifying for the final stage of the competition. The quantification of the internal load was determined by the session SPE (Foster et, al. 2001) method. Average values of 7.5 and 7.4 for departures from 1st stage and 8.2, 8.7 and 8.9 for the finals matches were found. The results indicate increasing loads throughout the competition, demonstrating that the games were held at high intensities, consistent with intensities of futsal matches analyzed using other indicators such as heart rate and lactate. Can conclude that the PSE is a reliable method to measure the intensity of the efforts in official games of futsal.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Childhood obesity is a complex contemporary phenomenon that strikes families worldwide. From the point of view of Anthropology of Food, eating practices involve the relations between sociocultural processes, besides nutritional processes. It is known that fat children’s mothers play an important, influential role in their kids’ eating practices, and their lack of perception of their kids’ nutritional situation may hinder the adherence to the treatment. This study aims to understand the mothers’ perceptions and experiences regarding their eating practices and their children’s obese bodies. We chose to carry out an exploratory research with a qualitative approach and, as an epistemological strand, the Anthropology of Food. Participants in the research were thirteen women, mothers of obese children ranging from five to nine years of age, from the city of Fortaleza, CE, Brazil, in the period of March to May, 2015. We used the semi-structured interview technique and discourse analysis. The obese children’s eating practices from the mothers’ point of view are described as the children consumes food, the act of fast eating, in front of the television, eating secretly a huge amount of food, as well as the consumption of processed food rich in fat, sugar and sodium...

ABSTRACT

Suicide is a leading cause of death among adolescents globally, and body weight is also a recognized reason for adolescent suicide. Therefore, we investigated the association between weight control behaviors (WCB) and suicide ideation and attempt, focusing on inappropriate weight control measures. We used data from the 2014 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, representing a total of 35,224 boys and 34,361 girls aged 12 to 18 years. Adolescents were classified into groups based on WCB: appropriate WCB, inappropriate WCB, and no WCB. We performed logistic regression models to examine associations between WCB and suicide ideation and attempt, controlling for covariates. Both boys and girls with inappropriate WCB were more likely to report suicide ideation and attempt. Underweight and normal weight boys with inappropriate WCB were more likely to think or attempt suicide, and underweight girls with inappropriate WCB were also more likely to attempt suicide. Among five common WCB combinations, the combination of "regular exercise, fasting, eating less" was highly associated with suicide ideation and attempt. We confirmed that inappropriate WCB is associated with suicide ideation and attempt among Korean adolescents. Given the high incidence rate of suicide among adolescents and the adverse effect of inappropriate WCB, encouraging adolescents to control their weight in healthy ways is imperative.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was done to investigate the prevalence and factors affecting body shape misperception among Korean adult women. METHODS: We analyzed raw data from the fourth Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families, for 7,658 women over 20 years of age. For the multiple logistic regression model, the dependent variable was existence of misperception (yes/no). RESULTS: The prevalence of body shape misperception was 42.6% (overestimation 6.5%, underestimation 36.1%). Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that age, education level, marital status, economic status and BMI were significantly associated with body shape underestimation. Education level and BMI were significantly associated with body shape overestimation. CONCLUSION: An effective obesity intervention program for women must reflect and monitor body shape perception as well as BMI.

ABSTRACT

Introduction:Body image has been increasingly discussed in the scientific community because of its relation to obesity and its impact to influence individuals to adopt a healthy lifestyle. There is evidence that satisfaction with body image may be related to habits such as physical activity, as well as the perception of body image may be related to several factors not yet well defined. Objectives:This thesis has two objectives, namely: 1) verify whether the dissatisfaction with body image and nutritional status, indicated by body mass index and the waist / height ratio, are independently associated with the intensity of physical activity and whether this association differs between men and women; 2)investigate and describe which factors may be related to the misperception of weight status among adults.Methodology:The sample of this study is from the baseline of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health, comprised of 15,105 adults and elderly, government employees from universities and research centers located in six Brazilian states: Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Bahia and Rio Grande do Sul. Two articles were developed, each referring to one of the goals. In the first article, the response variable was the level of physical activity, categorized into three intensities. In an adult population (35-64 years), by means of logistic regression, weestimated the chance to practice physical activity in the presence of the variables satisfaction with body image, body mass index and the waist / height ratio. In the second article, by means oflogistic regression, it was investigatedwhich sociodemographic, behavioral, anthropometric and psychological factors were related to the misperception of weight status in adulthoodaccording to sex(35-64 years). Results:In the first article, the body image dissatisfaction was present even among normal weight individuals of both sexes and was associated with lesser chances of practicing moderate physical activity in women and intense physical activity in men. Men and women with central obesity were lessprone to practice physical activity of high or moderate intensity. Overweight and obese men were more likely to report vigorous physical activity while obese women were less likely to report this level of physical activity. The second article presented that, in both sexes, older age, former smoking and binge eating were associated with greater chances of overestimating the weight, while higher educational level was related to less chances of underestimate their weight. Among men, the chances of underestimating the weight were also higher in non-manual/routine occupations and those with depression; and lower in heavy drinkers. In women, lower schooling was associated to greater chances of underestimation, but with no consistent gradient. Conclusions:Our results reveal that the participants from the multicenter study ELSA-Brazil have low body awareness and do not exercise sufficiently. The high prevalence of overweight and obesity observed may have contributed to the low body perception. Body image dissatisfaction and misperception of weight status seem to be associated with behaviors related to health in a negative way, such as physical inactivity, alcohol consumption and binge eating. However, it is clear that the body image does not seem to relate as robustly with the factors included in the study, but it can be considered an indicator of unhealthy behaviors and highlight the need for changes in lifestyle. It is important that individuals are able to distinguish between the ideal body advocated by the media and the healthy body. Thus, the accurate perception of body image can help promote positive changes in lifestyle and other appropriate weight control measures and beneficial to health and well-being.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the factors associated with maternal underestimation of weight status of children under five years in Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil. Methods A population-based cross-sectional study involving 673 children under five years of age was carried out. Maternal perception of child's weight was assessed by the question: "What do you think about your child's current weight?". The child's nutritional status was determined in terms of body mass index-for age. Poisson regression was used at 5% significance level. Concordance analysis was performed using the Kappa test. Results Among the children studied, 1.6 % were lean, 87.7% eutrophic, and 10.7% overweight. Most mothers (66.0%) correctly classified the weight of their children, 5.2% overestimated it, and 28.8% underestimated it. Mothers of overweight children and those whose children were older than 24 months had a higher prevalence of underestimation of weight, whereas the overweight mothers and those with higher education level had a lower prevalence of underestimation of weight of their children. The correlation between maternal perception of the chil's weight and the actual child's nutritional status was 0.12 (p<0.001). Conclusion Maternal misperception of weight of children under five years was observed. Maternal underestimation of their child's weight was directly associated with age and nutritional status of the child, and it was inversely associated with maternal education level and nutritional status. More attention should be paid to these mothers in order to prevent excessive weight gain at this age and further harm to children's health. .

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Mental health issues in adolescents have recently emerged as a social concern. Previous studies reported that there was a relationship between body image perception and mental health. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlations between actual or perceptional weight status and mental health issues in adolescents in Korea. METHODS: Data was based on the 5th National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey Data (2010-2012). The subjects were 1989 adolescents aged 12 to 18 years. Depending on the actual or perceptional weight status, participants were divided into several groups. Mental health indicators included experiencing stress, depressed mood and suicidal ideation. RESULTS: The multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted controlling for age, abdominal obesity, smoking and alcohol use, potency of exercises, and household income. Although this study did not find a correlation between actual weight status and mental health variables, it did find that girls who perceived themselves as overweight were more likely to experience stress (odds ratio, 2.24; 95% CI, 1.41-3.56) and depressed mood (odds ratio, 1.91; 95% CI, 1.01-3.62). CONCLUSIONS: Adolescent females in Korea who perceived themselves as overweight experienced significantly more stress and depressed mood.
